How to Calculate Air Freight Chargeable Weight
Airlines have to care about two things at the same time: how heavy your cargo is and how much aircraft space it occupies.
A compact crate full of machine parts may be physically heavy. A large carton full of cushions may be light but consume enough space to make the load planner stare thoughtfully at the ceiling. Chargeable weight gives air-cargo pricing a way to account for both situations.
The air freight chargeable weight is normally based on whichever is higher:
The shipment’s actual gross weight
The shipment’s volumetric weight

Air Freight Volumetric Weight Formula
When dimensions are entered in centimetres and weight is required in kilograms, the general formula is:
Volumetric weight = Length × Width × Height × Quantity ÷ Volumetric divisor
A commonly used general air-cargo divisor is 6,000 cm³/kg.
For example:
Volumetric weight = Total cubic centimetres ÷ 6,000
The final chargeable weight is:
Chargeable weight = Whichever is higher: actual weight or volumetric weight
The calculator uses 6,000 as its default divisor but lets you change the value because airlines, forwarders, courier services and commercial agreements may apply different volumetric factors.
Air Freight Chargeable Weight Example
Imagine a shipment containing two identical cartons:
Quantity: 2 cartons
Length: 80 cm each
Width: 60 cm each
Height: 50 cm each
Gross weight: 25 kg per carton
Volumetric divisor: 6,000
First calculate the total volume:
80 × 60 × 50 × 2 = 480,000 cm³
Now calculate volumetric weight:
480,000 ÷ 6,000 = 80 kg
Calculate actual gross weight:
25 × 2 = 50 kg
The volumetric weight is 80 kg, while the actual weight is 50 kg. Because 80 kg is higher, the estimated chargeable weight is 80 kg before any additional carrier-specific rating rules.
The cartons weigh 50 kg, but the aircraft space says 80 kg. In air cargo, the tape measure occasionally wins the argument with the weighing scale.
What Is Actual Gross Weight?
Actual gross weight is the physical weight of the complete shipment. It should include:
The goods
Cartons or crates
Pallets
Protective packaging
Strapping and wrapping
Any other material travelling with the cargo
Do not use only the net product weight. The carrier handles and transports the complete packed shipment, so the gross weight is the relevant figure.
What Is Volumetric Weight?
Volumetric weight, also called dimensional weight or volume weight, converts the physical space occupied by cargo into an equivalent weight.
This matters because aircraft capacity is limited by both weight and volume. A shipment can reach its space limit before reaching the aircraft’s weight limit. Volumetric weight helps account for large, lightweight cargo that consumes a disproportionate amount of space.
It does not mean the cargo has somehow gained weight while nobody was looking. It is a rating measurement rather than a new reading from the scale.
Why Is 6,000 Used as the Volumetric Divisor?
The general air-cargo rule commonly divides shipment volume in cubic centimetres by 6,000. This produces volumetric weight in kilograms.
The divisor represents a weight-to-space relationship. A lower divisor produces a higher volumetric weight. For the example shipment with 480,000 cm³:

That difference can materially affect a quotation. Always confirm the divisor used by the airline, freight forwarder or service provider before treating the result as final.
How to Measure Air Cargo Correctly
1. Measure the shipment after packing
Use the final packed dimensions, not the dimensions of the unpacked product.
2. Measure the greatest outer dimensions
Record the greatest length, width and height of each package. Include bulges, pallet overhang, wrapping and anything else that increases the occupied space.
3. Separate different package sizes
If the shipment contains packages with different dimensions or weights, add each package type on a separate calculator row.
4. Use gross weight
Include the packaging and pallet weight, not only the cargo itself.
5. Confirm carrier rounding rules
Airlines may apply rules for rounding dimensions, volumetric weight or chargeable weight. The calculator allows different chargeable-weight rounding options, but the booking carrier’s applicable rule should take priority.

No. Chargeable weight is one component of an air-freight quotation.
The final cost can also include:
Rate per kilogram
Airline minimum charge
Fuel surcharge
Security surcharge
Screening charges
Terminal handling
Documentation fees
Pickup and delivery
Customs clearance
Dangerous-goods handling
Special cargo requirements
A 100 kg chargeable weight does not mean the complete quotation is simply 100 multiplied by a published rate. Always review the inclusions, exclusions and minimum charges.
How to Reduce Volumetric Weight
Where cargo and safety requirements allow, consider:
Reducing unnecessary empty space
Selecting packaging closer to the product’s dimensions
Repacking cartons efficiently
Removing avoidable pallet overhang
Using stronger but less bulky protective materials
Consolidating compatible items
Never reduce packaging in a way that creates a damage, safety or compliance risk. Saving a few kilograms of volumetric weight is not a win if the cargo arrives looking as though it completed the journey outside the aircraft.
